POTSDAM - The Madrid-Waddington boys and Hammond Central girls will tip-off their respective New York State Class D tournament in a doubleheader tonight at SUNY Potsdam’s Jerry Welsh Gymnasium while the Canton Central girls begin their chase for state Class C honors at SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury.

What follows are preview capsules of the three games.

First Round

BOYS

Class D

Moriah vs. Madrid-Waddington

When, where: 7:45 tonight at SUNY Potsdam.

Outlook: The Yellow Jackets (16-7) reached the state championship game last year and earned another trip to the state playoffs after knocking off the top three seeds in the Section 10 tournament. Madrid-Waddington was the sixth seed. The Yellow Jackets beat St. Regis Falls 57-41 in the championship game, edged Edwards-Knox 51-49 in the semifinals and beat Chateaugay 68-52 in the quarterfinals. Senior Colin O’Bryan, who missed five games with an injury, is the team’s top player. O’Bryan averages 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Senior Richard Wright averages 11.3 points and senior Greg Thompson averages 9.5 points and 6.4 rebounds. ... Section 7’s Moriah (11-10) earned a trip to the state playoffs with a 49-44 win over Schroon Lake. The Vikings’ leader on offense is 6-foot-4 freshman center Adam Jaquish, who averages 13.1 points. Jacquish scored nine points in the championship game, and he had 15 points and 14 rebounds in a 48-33 semifinal win over Elizabethtown-Lewis. He added 10 points and 12 rebounds in a 60-41 win over Wells in the quarterfinals.

GIRLS

Class C

Canton vs. Hoosic Valley

When, where: 6 tonight at Adirondack CC, Queensbury.

Outlook: Canton (19-2) won both the Section 10 Class C title and the Section 10 overall title. The Golden Bears defeated St. Lawrence Central 45-32 to win the Class C title and beat Class B champion Salmon River 51-47 to claim the overall championship. Senior Emma Rexford leads the Golden Bears. Rexford averages 16.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Freshman Tori Daley averages 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. ... Hoosic Valley (19-3) defeated Berne-Knox 54-19 in the Section 2 championship game. Cassidy Chapko, who averages 19.7 points for the Indians, scored 16 in the title game. Kimberlee Kocienski, who averages 7.4, scored 14. It was the third straight title for the top-seeded Indians and the seventh in the last eight years.

Class D

Hammond vs. Elizabethtown-Lewis

When, where: 6 tonight at SUNY Potsdam.

Outlook: Hammond (20-2) is making a second straight visit to the state playoffs thanks in part to a defense that has allowed opponents only 31 points per game. The Red Devils beat Heuvelton 43-40 in the Section 10 championship game, and Hammond’s only losses this season are against Class B schools Ogdensburg Free Academy and Salmon River. The Red Devils are led by 6-foot senior Alyssa Crosby, who is this year’s Jan Reetz Award winner. Crosby averages 18.6 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.9 steals. Sophomore Courtney Bova averages 7.9 points and senior Gabby Marshall averages 7.1. ... Elizabethtown-Lewis (19-1) defeated Moriah 49-34 in the Section 7 championship game. The Lions are led by Lily Whalen, who averages 14.8 points, and Shonna Brooks, who averages 12. Brooks scored 19 points in the championship game and Whalen added 18.
