The technical nature of a high school cheerleading competition is extremely intricate and multi-dimensional.
But according to Lisbon Central Coach Beth Hooper, a teams success is anchored by the final and self explanatory category on the National Cheerleaders Association Judges scoresheet.
Our team does a great job in performance impression. In our first two competition the judges has all given us 9 1/2s or 10s said Coach Hooper, who is assisted by Jordan Woodside, after the Lady Knights won the B Division title of Ogdensburg Free Academy Competition with a competition high 249.5 points two days after winning the B Division and overall scoring honors at their own competition.
Our cheerleaders are extremely dedicated and they just love what they do. And they really sell their routines with great energy and facials.
The Knights consist of captains Megan Barney and Chelsey Duprey, Shelby Dishaw, Kaela Erwin, Emily Rayburn, Alyshia Murray, Nicole Neadom, McKenzie Lynch, Morgan Baldock, Holly Williams, Rileigh Mee, Kali Martin, Aneissa Fields, Adrien Hyde, Sierra Erwin and Bailey Dean.
Gouverneur took the A Division with 241 points and trimmed Malone (239) which took A Division honors at Lisbon. Members of the Wildcat squad are: Captains Brianne Young, Tiffany Streeter and Kaitlyn Redmond, Shaylene Adams, Bethany Bigelow, Jada Gale, Mikki Lawrence, Matasha McIntosh. We just had a great performance and we did our chin chins and scorpions extremely well.
Making its debut in the competition season, the host OFA Blue Devils posted a strong third place showing with 226.9 points.
Chateaugay took second in the B Division with 215 points and Clifton-Fine delivered a very strong outing to place third at 214 with the smallest squad in the event. Heuvelton (209.5) and Edwards-Knox (203.5) rounded out a high energy field.
OFA Coach Jackie Pinkerton felt that her team performed admirably in its first competitive routine of the season.
I thought we performed well. We completed all three of our basket tosses which was a great sign she said of the Devil squad which features Captains Victoria Peabody and Sarah Barr, Brianna Mahnke, Sara Badlam, Mariah Hurst, Courtney Brabant, Brenda Carter, Nicole Duprey, Morgan Gagnon, Kiana Zulauf, Emily Switzer, Hannah Leeder, Katie Ellard, Jamie Conant, Janelle Cordwell, Abigail Carmody, Kiana Conger, Miranda McGaw, Jessica Logan, Camielle Marshall, Ashley Lasiege, Donovan Smith, Konnor Murdock and Madelyn Regan.
Malone won the Sportsmanship Award and the Edwards-Knox JVs received the Spirit Award.
Teams were judged on jumps, tumbling, stunts including basket tosses and pyramids, dance, motion, showmanship, crowd appeal, transition and formations, creativity and choreography, execution of routine, and overall impression for a maximum score of 100 per a three-judge panel.
Guided by Coach Karen Johnson and captained by Brooke Johnson and Toryn Avery the Huskies consisted of Renee Grant, Taylor Simmons, Hannah Lamica, Natasha Nelson, Katelyn Oliver, Alyssa Bombard, Olivia Dame, Karissa Beaudry, Emily Kemp, Tori Keith, Bethany McGovern, Katlyn Rule, Marissa Hungerford, Cassandra Poupore, Danni Ann St. Mary, Brooke Clookey, Michaela Spaulding, Jenna Ashley, Sigourney Grenville, Kalsie Snyder, Emily Friend, Hannah Dustin, and Haleigh Lunan.
Chateaugay, coached by Heather Lockin to second place, consisted of Nicole Lamica, Lindsay Matthews, Sarah Gardiner, Kylie Hanley, Kimberly Reville, Katie Secore, Kira Ducote, Carolyn Stumpf, Desiree Stumpf, Alicia Howard, Gabrielle LaFleur, Morgan Legacy. Benjamin Roulston, and Danny Burl.
Delighted to claim a third place trophy was Coach Holly Durhams Clifton-Fine squad: David Law (Captain), Savannah Crane, Alicia Cole, Julia Walrath, Carly Watson, Jackie Durham, Shain Muncil and Paige LaPlant.
The area competition season will feature the Edwards-Knox Competition on Friday and the Heuvelton Competition on Saturday. Next weekend will feature the Massena (Friday) and SUNY Potsdam (Saturday) competitions.
