POTSDAM — The Orchestra of Northern New York will present the classic 20th century Russian fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall.

The concert will also feature pianist Noah P. Landers, 15, of Watertown, winner of the seventh annual James and Katherine Andrews Young Artist Instrumental Competition.

Noah is the son of William and Vicki Landers of Watertown. He is a sophomore at Carthage Central High School. His mother is a psychologist for the Carthage Central School District.

The family concert will begin with Modest Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain.” This piece was chosen by Walt Disney for the animated film, “Fantasia,” in which evil spirits and restless souls dance and fly through the air until driven back to their graves by the sound of an Angelus bell as night fades into dawn.

The orchestra will then accompany Noah as he performs the first movement of Camille Saint-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor. Saint-Saëns was a 19th century French composer.

Completing the first half of the evening will be John Williams’s suite from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”

After intermission, the orchestra will present Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” with narration by North Country Public Radio’s Todd Moe. The suite is known for introducing children to orchestra instruments.

“Peter and the Wolf” was commissioned by the Central Children’s Theater in Moscow in 1936. It has seen many adaptations and revised settings including the 1946 Disney cartoon of the same name. Most recently, in 2008, a British-Polish production won the Academy Award for best animated short film.

The orchestra, celebrating its 25th year, consists of approximately 60 professional musicians from New York, New England, Canada, and a few highly talented students, by audition, from the Crane School of Music.
