Massena, SLC boys basketball teams open state playoffs tonight in Saratoga

SARATOGA - The Massena Central and St. Lawrence Central boys basketball teams will be taking on their Section 2 counterparts tonight in a pair of New York State tournament first round games at the Saratoga High School Gym.

In the Class A opener which is slated to tip-off at 7:45 p.m., the Raiders will be going up an undefeated Scotia-Glenville squad that improved to 21-0 with a 53-45 win over Glens Falls in the Section 2 final this past weekend.

Coached by Tom Miller, Massena (12-9) avenged two regular-season losses and a loss in last year’s sectional final to Franklin Academy with a 48-47 win over the Huskies in this year’s Section 10 championship game. The Raiders are coming off a hard-fought loss to Class B champion OFA in the Section 10 Overall final last Friday night after having downed Class D champion Madrid-Waddington in the semi-finals the night before

Senior Zack Rusaw, who is 6-foot-4, scored the game-winner against FA with 1.7 seconds remaining. The Huskies had defeated Massena 59-38 and 75-61 during the regular season. Rusaw leads the Red Raiders in scoring with an average of 15.3 points. Classmate Joey Labelle averages 11.7 points followed by juniors Xavier Viskovich (6.8), Tyler Haas (6.0) and Rhoades Tarbell (4.5) and sophomore Zevon Viskovich (3.6).

The Tartans average 74.1 points. Joe Cremo leads the team in scoring with a 20.9 average. Andrew Tabbert averages 17.7 points and Alex Sausville averages 10.9.

The winner of tonight’s game goes up against Section 3 champion Bishop Ludden on Saturday at Onondage Community College starting at 8 p.m.

In the Class C tournament opener slated to begin at 6 p.m., the Larries (10-11) start their second straight trip to the state tournament against a Lake George (20-2) squad which overcame a four-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter and defeated top-seed Hoosic Valley 51-48 in the Section 2 title game.

Coached by Joey Reome, St. Lawrence successfully defended its first-ever sectional title with a 48-37 win over Canton in this year’s Class C final. The Larries have been led all season by senior forward Zane Ramsdell, who averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds en route to being named the North Division Co-MVP along with earning All-NAC First Team status. Junior Josh White is averaging another 10.7 points per game followed by classmate Cody Meacham (6.1), senior Jessi Greer (5.6), senior Tyler Savage (4.7) and junior Shane Fuentes (4.7).

Lake George is led by sophomore standout Joel Wincowski, who has already surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his varsity career. This winter, the 6’2” guard is averaging 25.5 points and has scored 38.7 percent of his teams points. The next leading scorer is Greg Rosenthal, who averages 8.1 points.

The winner of this evening’s game will travel to SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday to take on Section 7 champion AuSable Valley.
