HAMMOND A 47-year-old Jefferson County man faces drug charges following a Tuesday afternoon traffic stop on County Route 1 in the town of Hammond, state police said Wednesday.
Michael W. Phillips, Chaumont, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony, state police said.
Troopers said they pulled over Mr. Phillipss vehicle after a license plate scanner alerted them to an expired registration. A drug-sniffing dog detected six packages of cocaine fragments under one of the cars visors during a search of the vehicle, troopers said. Information about the weight and estimated value of the seized cocaine was not immediately available Wednesday, police said.
Mr. Phillips was sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, without bail to await further proceedings.
