MASSENA - The Massena Girls 5th and 6th Grade travel team captured top honors at the Heuvelton Pups in the Paint Tournament held February 9.

In the first game the Lady Raiders took on a team from Ogdensburg. The Raiders fell behind 12-2 before they came roaring back to win by a score of 21-19.

The second game Massena played Canton. This was the third time they met this year with both teams having previous victories. As expected it was a very close game this time with Massena pulling out a 21-18 victory.

In the third game of the day Massena played a team from Lisbon. It was close in the early game but Massena eventually pulled away for a 20-6 victory.

This set up the championship game against the host team Heuvelton. The game was very close throughout with many lead changes. It was very exciting as Heuvelton tied it up late at 18-18. Massena made a late basket to go up 20-18. Heuvelton did not give up, as they came down and were fouled. They made one of two to make it 20-19. Massena turned the ball over in their own end giving Heuvelton one last chance with 1.3 seconds left. On the inbounds, Massena was able to get just enough defensive pressure as the shot went up and in but was waived off by the officials for being too late..

Coach Barrie Miller expressed prided in the way the team stayed focused and played hard the whole day.

“It was a long day of basketball and to come away as tournament champs is a great feeling for the girls and their parents,” he noted.

Team members included; Makenzie Clough, Hannah Greco, Octavia Viskovich, Tisha Benedict, Alayna Taraska, Lauren Laughman, Megan Eddy, Breanna Taraska, Chloe Violi and Elizabeth George. Brian Eddy and Chip George served as assistant coaches.
