POTSDAM - Of the seven area minor hockey teams chasing New York State tournament honors this weekend, only the Potsdam Ice Storm 16U Girls will be doing so on home ice.
While the Ice Storm get set to stage the Tier II tournament at Pine Street Arena starting on Friday, the Northern Zone is sending teams to the girls Tier II tournaments in Saranac Lake (12U), Clinton (14U) and Chazy (19U).
Three Northern Zone boys champions are also in action at state tournaments this weekend. The St. Lawrence Thunder Bantams will be competing at the Tier II 14U playoffs while the Tri-Town Timberwolves PeeWees and Bantams are vying for Tier III 12U and 14U tournament championships. All three boys tournaments are slated to be held in Amherst where four rinks will be in continuous use throughout the weekend starting on Friday.
ICE STORM HOST 16U TOURNAMENT
Coached by Mike Grant along with assistants Rick Miller and Shawn Grant, the Potsdam Ice Storm 16U Girls open their state tournament on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Buffalo Hornets. The tournament opener between the Buffalo Regals and Lake Placid Lady Bombers faces off at 2 p.m. The other four teams in the tournament are the Brewster Lady Bulldogs, the Plattsburgh Wild, the Lysander Lightning and Webster Youth.
Games resume Saturday morning at 7 a.m. and will run through the day. The top four teams advance to the Sunday semi-finals at 10 a.m. and noon. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Ice Storm will face Lysander on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. before closing out the preliminary round against Webster Youth starting at 8 p.m.
Made up of players from several area school districts, the Ice Storm 16U Girls lineup includes; Kirstin Barkley, Colleen Besaw, MaKaylee Boak, Shannon Casey, Allie Compeau, Maddi Dillabough, Bailey Dillabough, Natalie Giglio, Kalie Grant, Kelsey Green, Ellen Greene, Mia Jermano, Ally Miller, Kelley Paduano, Jennifer Tardelli and Emily Wilmshurst.
ICE STORM 12U GIRLS IN SARANAC LAKE
The Ice Storm 12U girls are coaced by Dick Christy, Bruce Kent, Kari Tremper and Darren Wilson. They make their tournament debut in Saranac Lake on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against the Brewster Lady Bulldogs. Also competing for the state title are the West Seneca Wings, Lake Placid Lady Bombers, CNY Bobcats, Hamburg Hawks, Clifton Park and Amherst Knights.
Potsdams other two first round games are Saturday against Lake Placid at 9:30 a.m. and West Seneca at 3 p.m.
Also comprised of players from around the region, the Ice Storm 12U Girls roster includes; Allison Chamberlain, Elizabeth Christy, Hayley Gray, Makenzie Martin, Brittany Martin, Nevaeh McCargar, Alana McDonald, Daniela Pena, Taylor Razis, Erica Sloan, Keely Towne, Mattie Tremper, Kennedy Wilson, McKenna Yette and Hannah Zenger.
The semi-finals are Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. The state final is slated for 5 p.m.
THUNDER 14U GIRLS IN CLINTON
Guided by head coach Renee Young and assistant William MacCuaig, the St. Lawrence Thunder 14U Girls begin their quest for a state Tier II banner on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against West Seneca. They plays their other two preliminary round games on Saturday against the Syracuse Blazers at 10:40 a.m. and the Hamburg Hawks at 8 p.m.
The other Division consists of the Buffalo Regals, CNY Bobcats, Brewster Lady Bulldogs and Troy-Albany Icecats.
The Thunder 14U Girls roster consists of players from throughout our area including Elizabeth Collins, Madison Cullen, Raechel Davis, Jordan Emerson, Kaitlin Irvine, Katie MacCuaig, Mary Kate Mace, Samantha Mace, Maddie Mailhot, Mikenna Merry, Sidney Molnar, Molly OConnell, Abby Paquin, Kerrigan Rondeau, Maya Swamp and Jayden Young.
The tournament semi-finals are slated for Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon and the championship game at 6 p.m.
ICE STORM 19U GIRLS IN CHAZY
The Norfolk-Norwood Ice Storm 19U Girls will be competing in Chazy this weekend. They open on Friday against the Brewster Lady Bulldogs at 3:50 p.m. then played on Saturday against the West Seneca Wings at 8:50 a.m. and the Buffalo Hornets at 2:30 p.m.
The other four teams in the other round-robin division are the Skaneateles Lakers, the Lady Islanders, Chazy Youth and the Cazenovia Lady Chiefs.
The semi-finals are slated for Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon with the championship game scheduled to face-off at 6 p.m.
THUNDER BANTAM BOYS
Coached by Bobby Smith along with assistants Dan Bero, Mike McCormick and Chris Kormanyos, the St. Lawrence Thunder Bantams open the Tier II 14U tournament on Friday against the Westchester Vipers starting at 1:35 p.m. Their other first round games are Saturday against Cheektowaga at 7:50 a.m. and the Auburn Icehawks at 6:50 p.m.
The other round-robin division includes Adirondack, the Rochester Grizzlies, the Syracuse Blazers and the Nassau County Lions.
The Thunder 14U lineup includes; Nate Bressard (F), Dan Casey (D), Jon Paul Chauvin (F), Riley Clark (F), Bailey Conklin (F), Shane Cryderman (D), Nick Henrie (D), Jarrad Jackson (G), Noah Kormanyos (G), Andrew McCormick (F), Kaden Pickering (F), Jordan Robert (F), Ben Sprague (F), Turner Thomas (F), Josh Underwood (D), Wyatt Wilmshurst (F) and Sam Woods (F).
The semi-finals are both slated for Sunday at 11:20 a.m. and the championship game at 6:20 p.m.
Last years Thunder Bantams relayed a Tier II state title into a berth in the USA Hockey National Championship game.
The Tri-Town Timberwolves PeeWees will be making their debut at the Tier III 12U tournament on Friday against the Niagara County Coyotes at 6 a.m. and return to the ice later in the day to take on the Palisades Predators starting at 5 p.m. They close out the preliminary round Saturday morning against the Onondaga Thunder starting at 11:30 a.m.
The other teams competing for the Tier III 12U championship are Genesee-Batavia, the Cortland Flames, the Bronxville Blackhawks and Chazy Youth.
The semi-finals are both set for Sunday at 7 a.m. and the championship game at 2 p.m.
The Tri-Town Timberwolves Bantams open the Tier III 14U tournament on Friday at 11:45 a.m. against the Bedford Bears. Their other two first round games are Saturday against East Aurora at 6 a.m. and the Valley Eagles at 5 p.m.
Competing in the other round-robin division are Chazy Youth, the Olean Arrows, the Onondaga Thunder and Millbrook.
The tournament semi-finals are both scheduled for Sunday at 9:25 a.m. with the championship game set to face-off at 4:10 p.m.
