Deputy Joseph D. Murtha has retired from the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department after 25 years of service.
His last day with the department was Feb. 28. Promoted to detective in 2003, he most recently served as the school resource officer in the Indian River Central School District.
Mr. Murtha also had been a member of the Metro-Jefferson Drug Task Force. In 2002, he was awarded the Deputy of the Year Award at the American Legion Law and Order Night. He was a general topics instructor and specialized in emergency vehicle operations.
Undersheriff Paul W. Trudeau credited the deputy with influencing many Indian River students lives. Mr. Murtha was hired in January 1988 by then-Sheriff Donald F. Newberry.
