Selective sequester

The White House, in anticipation of the annual spring pilgrimage to Washington by families with their grade school children in tow, has canceled all tours of the Executive Mansion. Forget about those tickets Congressman Owens helped you acquire. Forget about showing your children the White House, which withstood the ravages of the war of 1812 and has been home of every president since John Adams moved in in 1800.

No! Sequestration has closed the front door of the White House to unelected American children. The White House cited “staffing reductions resulting from sequestration.” The tours will not be rescheduled and the freeze will be in effect “until further notice.”

The White House certainly knows how to kick American families.

Upon hearing of this announcement, editors of The Wall Street Journal took a look around and found that the Department of Agriculture was helping sponsor the California Small Farm Conference in Fresno, which begins the day after the tours are canceled. That conference’s website is quite appealing, as it describes three days of festivities, networking opportunities and grazing on “the rich culinary landscape of the California Central Valley. This mouthwatering event features fine wines and exceptional micro-brews paired with seasonally driven culinary delicacies. A fun way to network with other locavores, farmers and food activists.” Find it at

The White House survived a British attack and housed the presidents who guided the nation through the Civil War, two World Warsand the Depression, and brought civil rights to all Americans. But it falls to the petty failure of an administration which values fine wines, micro brews and culinary delicacies over the curiosity of American schoolchildren.
