County gun law resolution inadequate

To The Editor:

To The St. Lawrence County Legislature:

I attended a rally Feb. 28 in Albany to repeal the NYSAFE Act. I saw many more people there than the media wished to report. We were a very civil group demanding that our rights not be infringed upon.

That being said, I just got home from the St. Lawrence County Legislature meeting. I was hoping that you were going to do the right thing. However, politics got in the way as usual. You voted on a very watered-down version asking that the NYSAFE Act be amended rather than repealed. The reasons given for this were you were concerned you would offend Governor Cuomo, and he would pull support for your proposed increase in the sales tax to 4 percent. The second reason was so you would not offend Assemblywoman Addie Russell, as she voted for the NYSAFE Act, and she threw you a bone of $100,000 for a fire training center. Do not get me wrong. Fire training is a necessity, and as an exempt member of a local volunteer fire department, I am all for this training.

Tonight what I saw was a blatant disregard for the constitution of the United States, as well as the constitution of New York State. You stomped on both documents and spit in the face of our forefathers. I could not believe you sold out for a little money. But most political votes come down to money.

For those who voted against repealing, I would like to ask how many of the people you represent have contacted you to ask you to defend the NYSAFE Act? I expect very few, if any. I certainly did not see any at the meeting tonight to voice their support.

I would also ask this of you who voted to amend the law: Which parts would you amend? I doubt very many of you have even read the law, much less know what to amend. If you think you appeased the gun owners and sportspersons of St. Lawrence County, you are sadly mistaken. This was more of a slap in our faces, and it will only push us harder to make this right. If you want to jump on the Addie Russell and Governor Cuomo bandwagon, so be it. I believe that band wagon will be heading out of town in November.
