ROSSIE — The Town Council decided Thursday not to accept the Rossie Youth & Community Center, leaving the center’s board with a decision to make about the future.

Community Center President Kimberly A. Hutton, who is also a member of the town board, had wanted the town to take over the center as a way to expand its possibilities. She and fellow board member Harry E. Turnbull did not vote because of their involvement with the center, and the three other members of the board rejected the idea.

Absent town control, Mrs. Hutton had suggested the community center’s nonprofit organization dissolve if it could find another agency, such as Habitat for Humanity, to take over the property. Until Thursday’s public hearing and meeting, Mrs. Hutton said, she was unaware of the number of people eager to keep the community center going.

“If this group wants to take it over, then that’s what I want,” she said. “I don’t want to give away Rossie history. That was never my intention.”

Attorney Charles A. Gardner, one of the community members who wants to take responsibility for the community center, had suggested Mrs. Hutton resign so that others could take her place.

“That may be a possibility,” Mrs. Hutton said.

The community center board will meet Monday to discuss the community center and the town’s recreation program.

“My deep goal is for recreation to succeed,” Mrs. Hutton said.
