NEW BREMEN — A one-vehicle accident in the town of New Bremen sent six people to hospitals Monday night.

Lewis County Undersheriff James M. Monnat said Hannah R. Murphy, 20, Castorland, was southbound in a 2004 Mazda 323 at 10:24 p.m. on Deveines Road when she got distracted as she looked down at the radio. As a result, the vehicle left the east side of the road and struck a tree, Mr. Monnat said. The vehicle suffered major damage.

Miss Murphy and front-seat passenger Travis M.R. Wicks, 22, Lowville, were taken to Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, for treatment of back injuries.

A back-seat passenger, Chelsey L. Zehr, 20, Castorland, was sent to Lewis County General Hospital before being taken to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, for treatment of a broken leg and knee.

Three unrestrained children in the back seat were sent to Lewis County General Hospital: a 3-year-old boy treated for a broken collarbone, and two girls, ages 6 and 11, who were treated for unspecified injuries, the Sheriff’s Department report said.

Miss Murphy was charged with failure to keep right, speed not reasonable or prudent, one count of unrestrained back-seat passenger age 7 to 15, one count of unrestrained back-seat passenger age 4 to 6, and one count of unrestrained back-seat passenger under age 4.

All charges are returnable to New Bremen Town Court.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the New Bremen Fire Department, Lewis County Search and Rescue, Beaver Falls Ambulance and Croghan Ambulance.
