Potsdam Brass Quintet featuring Frackenpohl composition

POTSDAM - The Potsdam Brass Quintet will present a spring concert featuring a seminal composition by Crane School of Music Professor Emeritus Arthur Frackenpohl among other works at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music.

The concert will feature the brass quintets of Viktor Ewald, Malcolm Arnold and Arthur Frackenpohl — three of the most groundbreaking and influential compositions in the brass repertoire.

The Ewald quintet, written in the 1880s, is generally considered to be the first significant work ever composed for brass quintet.

The Arnold quintet, written in 1961 for the New York Brass Quintet, is arguably the most popular brass quintet in the repertoire today.

Frackenpohl’s “Brass Quintet No. 1” is considered by many to be the seminal work that propelled the Potsdam composer to national and international prominence as a composer of serious artistic merit.

In addition to the three major works, shorter selections by John Cheetham, Samuel Scheidt and Libby Larsen will be featured.

The Potsdam Brass Quintet consists of John Ellis and James Madeja on trumpet, Kelly Drifmeyer on horn, Mark Hartman on trombone and Charles Guy on tuba.

This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The Potsdam Brass Quintet, the brass quintet-in-residence at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, has performed in concert throughout much of the United States and Canada, including Lincoln Center in New York City and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

The ensemble has been featured at the International Trombone Festival, the International Horn Society Workshop, the College Music Society Conference, the Skyline Brass Music Festival, the MENC National Conference, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the New York State School Music Association Conference and the New England Brass Convention.

The Potsdam Brass Quintet has recorded four albums on the Kendor and Mark Recording labels; a fifth album is currently in production.
