CANTON — For the past 13 years, local politics has been part of the daily life of Canton businesswoman Sylvia M. Kingston. But an increasing commitment to family and business has forced the veteran village trustee to step down from the village Board of Trustees.

Ms. Kingston submitted her letter of resignation to village officials on Monday.

“It’s simply become too much for me. Between business and tending to family matters, I can’t find enough time to devote to village government. I feel it’s time for me to get off the board and let someone with more time step in,” said Ms. Kingston. “I’ve been on the board since 1999 and I feel I’ve been a strong voice for the people of Canton. But now, for me, it’s become a bit overwhelming.”

She contemplated the decision for some time. In fact, she submitted a letter of resignation to Canton Mayor David P. Curry on Dec. 24, but the board declined to take action.

“I’ve got a lot on my plate right now and unfortunately village government is not my priority right now. It’s certainly with a heavy heart I am resigning but I have decided I need to devote more time to my family obligations and my mom requires more of my time. I feel now is the right time to step down,” she said.

Ms. Kingston’s seat will be up for election this November. The board will have to decide whether to appoint someone to fill the vacancy or wait. Village trustee terms are for two years.

“It’s been an honor serving the public. I’ve worked with a lot of dedicated people over the years, and all of them had Canton’s best interest in mind,” she stated. “I thank everyone who has supported me over the past 13 years.”
