New Defense Secretary orders review of controversial “drone medal” ranking

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered a review of a medal created to recognize combat contributions made by troops many miles away from the battlefield, according to a report by Stars and Stripes.

The Distinguished Warfare Medal has drawn flak from veterans groups and lawmakers because it is set to rank above the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor Device.

According to nomination requirements released by the Air Force on Feb. 15, the medal will be awarded to “honor individuals for single acts of extraordinary achievement, not involving acts of valor, that directly impact combat or other military operations.”

As late as Monday, Defense Department officials, including Mr. Hagel, said they would not consider changing the ranking of the medal.
