Help a family in fight against cancer

Recently cancer has become the second most common cause of death in the United States. Roughly 597,689 people will pass away in a year’s time due to this devastating disease. This is about 24.2 percent of all total deaths. Just in New York state alone there are about 44,981 deaths, which is close to 30.7 percent. If cancer has become so tragic and upsetting to many, then why hasn’t anyone found a cure for it in today’s society? Why aren’t we as Americans doing our part in trying to find new ways to stop this heartbreaking sickness? If finding the cure right away isn’t the answer, then why don’t we come up with other ways to help those who have lost their loved ones?

I believe that if you do anything that involves raising money for the family, they will be incredibly grateful. Cancer treatments are not cheap, so in many cases the family cannot pay off the medical bills, which leaves them in debt. Why aren’t all communities getting together to help raise money for the families?

I can relate to this very situation because I live in a small community in the little town of Croghan, which means that everybody knows everybody. We recently had an active community member pass away in his early years from cancer. We found out that the family did not have any insurance, and the wife did not have the best paying job, which meant that all of the large medical bills had no way of being paid. My family is close to the family that lost their loved one, so we decided to have a benefit for them to raise some money.

The turnout for it was unbelievable. There were people there that were not all that familiar with the family going through the hardship, but they had heard through word of mouth that there was going to be a jerked pork dinner served and an auction, which meant a lot of fun. The amount that was raised was never disclosed. All that was said was that with the help of many we were able to raise a lot of money for this family, which in turn led them to cover the bills.

If we can’t find a cure right now, then we need to start working together to figure out other ways to help, such as having a benefit for the family in need.
