When factoring in putting together a team, training for members and registering for the 22nd annual North Country Community Cup, there is no time like the present.
Community Cup events begin May 21, with competitions running until the culminating day of events June 1 at Jefferson Community College. The second-time location is a switch from previous years, when the points-based event was organized by the YMCA and held at Watertown High School.
I usually describe it to people as a corporate Olympics, said Yvonne Brown, a member of the Community Cup planning committee. Its an annual activity where local businesses and organizations compete in various sporting events for bragging rights.
The event has downsized due to limitations on the JCC campus.
We have eliminated predicted-time events, Ms. Brown said. This year, we are hoping to offer 12 events instead of the 10 last year. People miss the track events that used to be held at (WHS), so this year we are turning our 2.2-mile run/walk held on our nature trails into a race and also adding a track relay event on the soccer field.
Other events include tennis, tug of war, volleyball, dodgeball, golf chipping, bocce, soccer, a home run derby and an adventure scramble, and points can be earned in the participation category.
Each team member can earn points for their team by working out between April 7 and May 18. Participation points will also be earned by everyone who participates in the 2.25-mile run/walk, Ms. Brown said.
This year, the hope is to lure more than 10 teams.
We were really disappointed when the smaller schools dropped out, Lori Griffin, captain of the 2012 winning team from Copenhagen Central School District, said last spring. Of her teams win, she said, It was bittersweet. We were sad that there were only 10 teams. It diminished the victory.
The event is open to employees of any business in Jefferson, Lewis or St. Lawrence counties. Teams must have no more than 30 people; participants must be over 18 and either full-time, part-time, contract, active layoff or retired employees of the organization they are representing. Spouses and significant others are eligible, provided they live at the same address as the employee.
Its a great health and wellness activity, and a great way to get to know fellow employees, Ms. Griffin said.
Registration is $75 per team. The winning ream receives a cup to keep; all teams receive a photo plaque. For more information or to register, call Ms. Brown at 786-2200, ext. 2466.
