Golden Knights celebrate swim title

Three generations of Golden Knights from two different locations were on hand as York Central School secured a repeat Class D title at the Section 5 Boys Swimming Championships on Feb. 16.

York secured the victory with a comfortable 334-262 margin over Naples in the championship meet which was staged at Bath Central School.

Senior Devin Lajoie played a key role for the York Golden Knights who won the Harley Allendale Invitational and the Livingston County Athletic Association Division II title earlier in the season.

“We had eight swimmers take 15 top eight finishes in 11 swimming events to secure our second straight sectional championship,” said York Coach Tim Mee to the Livingston County News.

“Sectional senior swimmers Troy (Lubanski), Devin (Lajoie), Jacob (Streb) and Eli (Carey) were a core part of the championship team.”

Devin Lajoie is the son of Bernie and Tracy Robinson Lajoie who were both standout athletes at Lisbon Central School. They remained true to their roots when they relocated to the Geneseo area to begin their professional careers.

When seeking a home they picked York when they drove by the school and saw a very familiar sign “Home of the Golden Knights”.

At the sectional meet the York team was spurred on by a spirited backing which included Devin’s family and three other former Lisbon Golden Knights in Traci Lajoie’s parents Roger and Mary Lou Robinson and her sister Renee Robinson of Lisbon.

Devin Lajoie, who has been accepted at Clarkson University (the North Country’s collegiate Golden Knights) in Potsdam and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., swam on the winning 400 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay teams. He posted an impressive 22.56 in his 50 split of the 200 event.

He also came through with fourth places with personal best swims in the 50 (23.41) and 100 (52.17) freestyles.
