OGDENSBURG — The Maple City earned its moniker with a lush and vibrant urban forest, and now city officials are seeking grant money to maintain and replenish trees on public property.

Ogdensburg will seek up to $191,000 from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a federal task force, to plant trees throughout city parks and along streets and replace diseased or damaged trees.

Andrea L. Smith, city planner, said the application follows up on a tree survey conducted by natural resources consultant Forecon in Falconer, near Jamestown.

In January, the company delivered a report suggesting Ogdensburg diversify its tree stock — 49 percent of the city’s trees are maples.

The company recommended no more than 30 percent of the city’s trees come from one family.
