CARTHAGE — American Legion Post 789 is offering to purchase a flag and pole to replace the one at the Soldier’s Monument on State Street. The post, however, wants the flag moved to the front side of the monument.

Richard Simmons, the post commander, discussed the proposal at the village Board of Trustees meeting Monday night.

He proposed that blocks be removed from the sidewalk leading from the main village sidewalk up to the monument and the pole be installed there.

Mr. Simmons said if need be, he would solicit funding from other organizations to install lighting for the flag, but he said he thought there is sufficient illumination from the lighting for the monument.

Village President G. Wayne McIlroy said the board had discussed and approved the moving of the flag last year. He said he would meet with Mr. Simmons to follow through on the project.
