Lowville-Michael J. Smith 68, known by many as “Smitty”, went to be with the Lord on March 19, 2013 at the Lewis County General Hospital. He was born June 14, 1944 in Utica, NY, a son of Harold and Elizabeth Hynes Smith. Mike served our country with the U.S. Army entering basic training at Fort Dix, NJ in 1964 later serving as a supply specialist until his discharge in 1966. He then served nearly twenty years in the NYS National Guard. Mike was previously married to the former Karen Kloster and then Barbara Schneider.

“Smitty” was self-employed and for several years owned and operated “ Mike Smith’s

Plumbing and Heating” and since 1998 owned and operated “Smitty’s Smoke Shop” in Lowville. He was active in many organizations including Beaver Falls Vol. Fire Dept., Lowville Search and Rescue serving as an EMT, and was a lifetime member of the Lowville American Legion Post # 162. “Smitty” enjoyed bowling, playing cards, fishing, riding motorcycle, baseball and of course story telling.

Surviving are two daughters, Susanne VerSchneider, Beaver Falls, NY, and Sheri & Russ Terrillion, Suffolk, VA, one son, Douglas & Tara Smith, Smithfield, VA, seven grandchildren, a longtime companion, Mary LeFleur and her children Tonya and Tara, two sisters, Lorraine & Arthur Reppel, Canastota, NY, and Shirley Maher, Grove City, Ohio, one brother, Mark and Angela Smith, Bradenton, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 pm at the Sundquist Funeral Home, 7676 State Street, Lowville, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in “Smitty’s” memory to Lewis County Hospice or the Lowville American Legion Post #162.
