DEER RIVER — Thirteen fire departments were called Saturday afternoon to battle a fire that destroyed a town of Denmark home.

West Carthage firefighters at 2:12 p.m. were called to the Michael J. and Susan Brown residence at 10645 Station Road and called in 12 other departments for mutual aid, primarily for their tanker trucks.

No injuries were reported, but the one-story ranch-style home and its contents were deemed a total loss, according to Lewis County Fire Coordinator James M. Martin.

“It had a pretty decent start,” Mr. Martin said.

The blaze apparently began when nobody was home, he said.

According to Mr. Martin, the owner reported that he noticed some fire around the water heater in the basement when he returned home, and was unable to extinguish it before it got into the walls and engulfed the house.

However, the cause remains under investigation.

Tanker trucks from various departments were lined up along much of the short, dead-end road to provide a continuous supply of water to the firefighting effort.

Firefighters from Copenhagen, Carthage, Castorland, Natural Bridge, Lowville, Champion, Beaver Falls, Felts Mills, Rutland, Deferiet, Harrisville and Great Bend assisted at the scene.

National Grid workers also responded. There was insurance on the structure.

The 1,248-square-foot home was built in 1979, according to Lewis County property records.
