LOUISVILLE - A weekend surge to the 2012-13 New York State Amateur Hockey Association Tier III Championship came down to some last-second heriocs for the Louisville Lightning 16U boys team in Amherst.

After going undefeated through the preliminary round with wins over North Franklin (5-1) and Palisades (6-1) and a tie with Valley (4-4), the Lightning earned a bid to the tournament final with a convincing 6-1 decision over Norfolk-Norfolk in their Sunday morning semi-final.

In the championship game, the Lightning held on for a 2-1 win over Great Neck, which was awarded a penalty shot with one-tenth of a second left in regulation only to be thwarted by netminder Jonathan Stone.

Coached by John Beattie, who also guided the Louisville 18U team to a runner-up finish in the Tier III tournament in Amherst the weekend before, along with assistants Rob Brothers and Jim Kozsan, the Lightning 16U consisted of players from several North Country communities. Team members included Jeff Bain, Mark Bender, Logan Brothers, Sean Casey, Burke Comeau, Ivan Delosh, Ross Driscoll, Tyler Fobare, Bailey Hewlett, Zach Kozsan, Billy MacCuaig, Cameron Marsh, Cody Moore, Dalton Mullin, Devin Page, JP Reagan, Dylan Stone, Jonathan Stone and Jacob Vierno.

Earning assists for the Lightning during the semi-final game were Cody Moore, Ivan Delosh and Devin Page, each with two, while JP Reagan and Jacob Vierno each tallied solo helpers for the Lightning. Logan Brothers was solid in the net, allowing only a single goal in the contest to backstop the win.

Lightning 2, Great Neck 1: The championship game which was filled with excitement. The first period of the game was hard fought and physical with end to end action that produced a scoreless tie. The second period saw both teams trade chances with Louisville pulling ahead 1-0 with a goal scored by Zach Kozsan assisted by Tyler Fobare with 7:15 remaining. Louisville would tally another goal in the second at the 11:37 mark with an unassisted goal scored by Cody Moore. Great Neck answered with a goal with 1:39 remaining in the second cutting the lead to 2-1 heading into the third period.

The final period was action-packed with both teams giving it all they had. With 5.9 seconds left, Louisville was assessed a delay of game penalty which resulted in a defensive zone face-off.

A wild goalmouth scrambled ensued which led to a Louisville player being whistled for covering the puck in the crease and resulting in a penalty shot being award.

The Great Neck player approached the Louisville net slowly making numerous fakes with his blade and legs only to have the puck neatly poke-checked away by Stone in securing the state Championship for the Lightning.
