This year’s Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club Expo could shape up to be one of the best on record.

The final attendance numbers are not yet tallied, but club Assistant Director Megan E. McNamara said Monday that between 7,000 and 8,000 people attended the 37th annual event at the Edgar A. Newell II Memorial Dome between Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.

“It’s looking like it’s going to be one of the best years we ever had,” she said.

She said it is hard to pinpoint a reason why so many people came out.

“It could have been just people getting out to support a good cause,” Ms. McNamara said.

In addition to sporting a group of loyal vendors, crafters and organizations which attend year after year to make Expo a success, Ms. McNamara said about 400 volunteers work tirelessly to pull off the three-day event.

“We get some new ones ever year, but we also have people who have been here helping us from the start, and they put in as much effort now as they did since we started,” she said.

On top of volunteer efforts are the local businesses which donate prizes and cash to help add to the club’s fundraising efforts.

Misty Griffith of Ogdensburg was drawn Sunday as the winner of the $5,000 Expo grand prize, donated by Blevins Auto Group.

Ms. Griffith purchased the winning ticket from her grandfather, John Reed, and his wife, Donna. Her children, Conner and Camden, are active Boys and Girls Club members.

Mrs. Griffith could not be reached for comment Monday, but Ms. McNamara said it was apparent that Mrs. Griffith “was very excited” to have won.

Other winners drawn Sunday were: Brian Pinkerton of Ogdensburg and Debi Stone of Potsdam, $1,500 gift certificates from Gardner’s Flooring and Furniture; Kathy Kelley of Ogdensburg, $1,300 gift certificate to Triple A Building Centers; Karen Bunstone of Potsdam, a family membership to Northern Physical Therapy; Jeff LaJoy of Ogdensburg, a $1,000 gift certificate to Carbino’s Jewelers; Leo Tynon of Ogdensburg, a $1,000 savings bond from NBT bank; and Joe Dishaw of Ogdensburg, $1,000 donated by Phillips Diner.

Winners of the $2 raffle were: Patty Bouchard, jacuzzi accommodations and dinner for two donated by Gran-View; Keegan Wears, one night jacuzzi suite at the Stone Fence; Karen Howie, dinner for five donated by Gran-View; Rosemary LaJoy, a will services package donated by attorney Marcia LeMay; and Mikayla Wagstaff, a pizza a month for a year from Pizza Hut.

A complete list of prize winners will be published later this week.
