Snow Lover’s Trivia: Time to enjoy spring skiing at Whiteface

Longer Days, More Sun, Warmer Weather...spring skiing!

Spring is here (or rather winter is letting up soon!). Some of the best spring skiing and riding for the entire family is found at Whiteface Mountain, and tons of Springfest fun. Every weekend there will be live music or entertainment, free clinics and free Whiteface Mountain Tours. The fun will last for a while this season.

Last week, I skied the 1600ft vertical black, Hoyt’s High, for the first time off Lookout Mountain. The conditions at Whiteface were surprising like February with about everything open including The Slides. Next time I go to Whiteface, I will get my spring skiing in on Hoyt’s High. My order is soft moguls, sun on my face, sunglasses, hair in a ponytail (no helmet), snowpants and a t-shirt. What is your spring skiing outfit?

March 30th is the Whiteface Wipeout, a winter themed obstacle race which will test your balance, agility and endurance in ways only Whiteface can. Winners will be crowned Mr. & Mrs. Whiteface and receive a brand new pair of skis. Call Whiteface Guest Services for registration at 518-946-2223 (x310).

March 31st is the Whiteface Easter Egg Hunt. There will be over 2000 eggs this year including a gold egg holding a special grand prize! At 11 a.m is the Easter Egg Hunt for kids 6 & under on the Mixing Bowl. At noon is an Easter Egg Hunt for kids 7-12 on Bear Trail. Ski down from the top or hike up from the bottom. Between 7:15 and 7:45 a.m. are complimentary Cloudsplitter Gondola rides for Easter services patrons. At 8 a.m. is a Non-denominational service at the top of Little Whiteface. From 8:30-10:30 a.m., there is an Easter buffet in the J.Lohr Wine Bar & Cafe featuring: Carved Ham, Eggs Benedict, Waffles and much more.

Retro Weekend starts April 6th. Grab your raddest neon jump suit and most stylish headband and head up to the mountain to show everyone how awesome you were in the 80’s. Admit it, you’ve been secretly waiting for this all season. Meet up on the Cloudspin deck at 4 p.m. to see who will be judged raddest of them all.

Retro Super Sunday, April 7th, Pond Skimming is on. Do you think you can make it across a sea of slush? Many have tried and almost as many have failed but crossing the pond isn’t the only way to win. Contestants will be judged on distance, splash and costume. Adults ski for $40, teens ski for $35 and juniors $30.

Whiteface opened in 1958 and has earned its place in the annals of big-mountain skiing. It has the greatest vertical drop in the east, which means if pointing the boards downhill is your thing, you’ll have plenty of opportunities. The area regularly stage major national and international skiing events, yet welcome first-time skiers and riders every day. Whiteface has 86 trails (a third rated for expert skiers), 11 lifts including a gondola, terrain parks, adrenaline-pumping glades skiing, and six Whiteface restaurants.

Whiteface is the Olympic Mountain, which means not only can you carve the same turns as the world’s best racers, you can visit the other Olympic facilities, like the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex and the Olympic Sports Complex, just down the road in Lake Placid.
