POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central girls and Colton-Pierrepont boys opened their 2013 lacrosse seasons by dropping non-league decisions to their Indian River counterparts in a mix twinbill staged at the PCS turf field.

Indian River 13, Potsdam 7: The Lady Warriors worked their way to a 5-1 lead by halftime then outscored the Lady Sandstoners 3-1 over the final seven minutes to break open a close game.

“This was only our second time outside on the field this spring. We did some good things but we also saw some things that we’re going to have to work on,” noted co-head coach Sarah Bullard as the Lady Sandstoners once again look to challenge for NAC regular season and Section 10 Class C honors this spring.

“We have a lot of returning players but we’re a young team with only two seniors. Still, we have very high expectations this year,” she added.

In Tuesday’s season-opener for both squads, Indian River was led by the senior duo of Katie Brierton, who tallied five goals and two assists, and Paige Fayette, who generated six goals while junior netminder Payge Heingarten turned aside five shots backstopping the win.

Michaela Cole, who joins Kady Hart as the lone other senior on this year’s Potsdam roster, anchored the Lady Sandstoner scoring with two goals and an assist. Junior Annette Rishe also struck for a pair of goals while juniors Ally Miller and Jenny Tardelli netted singletons. Seventh-grader Hannah Dreschel connected for a goal as well in her varsity debut and returning freshman Kalie Grant fashioned the lone assist of the game for Potsdam. Sophomore Katelyn Bloom worked the Lady Sandstoner crease for 17 stops.

The junior core of this year’s team also includes Abby Gruneisen and Ashley Anderson. Sophomore contributors include Kirstie Bigwarfe, Stephanie Keating, Kaileigh Kingsley, Emma-Lee Frary, Courtney DiTullio, Drew Brown and Allie Compeau. Also part of a capable freshman nucleus are Paige McCabe and Kendall Stone. First-year eight-graders looking to earn playing time include Ashlee Marsh, Peyton Warden and Matisyn Beamer. Jill Gaebel will be serving as co-head coach.

The Lady Sandstoners are slated to open the NAC season on April 10 on the road against Saranac Lake.

Indian River 7, C-P 3: In the nightcap, the teams played through a scoreless first quarter before the Warriors built a 3-2 halftime lead then outscored the Colts 4-1 in the second half to come away with the win.

Connor Brown sparked the Indian River attack with four goals. Kyle Smith chipped in a pair of goals while Logan Prudhomme netted a singleton and Kaleb Loar turned aside seven of the shots he faced in the winning effort.

For the Colts, the senior trio of Gyle Dominy, Jake Angleberger and Andrew Holden broke through for goals while classmate Cody Green produced the lone assist. Senior Craig Miller recorded 14 saves.

Guided by coach Jim Nee, the Colts feature a solid senior core this spring that also include Isaiah Johnson and John Patraw. Juniors expected to make strong contributions include Noah Whalen, Scott Boyce, Pat Paul, Eli Smith and Preston Frank. The Colts will also rely on the efforts of sophomores Zack Armstrong, Isaiah Newton, Mica Whalen and Mason Coffey along with freshman Jeff Clark.

The Colts make their NAC debut on April 9 in Ogdensburg against OFA.
