POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central girls and Colton-Pierrepont boys opened their 2013 lacrosse seasons by dropping non-league decisions to their Indian River counterparts in a mix twinbill staged at the PCS turf field.
Indian River 13, Potsdam 7: The Lady Warriors worked their way to a 5-1 lead by halftime then outscored the Lady Sandstoners 3-1 over the final seven minutes to break open a close game.
This was only our second time outside on the field this spring. We did some good things but we also saw some things that were going to have to work on, noted co-head coach Sarah Bullard as the Lady Sandstoners once again look to challenge for NAC regular season and Section 10 Class C honors this spring.
We have a lot of returning players but were a young team with only two seniors. Still, we have very high expectations this year, she added.
In Tuesdays season-opener for both squads, Indian River was led by the senior duo of Katie Brierton, who tallied five goals and two assists, and Paige Fayette, who generated six goals while junior netminder Payge Heingarten turned aside five shots backstopping the win.
Michaela Cole, who joins Kady Hart as the lone other senior on this years Potsdam roster, anchored the Lady Sandstoner scoring with two goals and an assist. Junior Annette Rishe also struck for a pair of goals while juniors Ally Miller and Jenny Tardelli netted singletons. Seventh-grader Hannah Dreschel connected for a goal as well in her varsity debut and returning freshman Kalie Grant fashioned the lone assist of the game for Potsdam. Sophomore Katelyn Bloom worked the Lady Sandstoner crease for 17 stops.
The junior core of this years team also includes Abby Gruneisen and Ashley Anderson. Sophomore contributors include Kirstie Bigwarfe, Stephanie Keating, Kaileigh Kingsley, Emma-Lee Frary, Courtney DiTullio, Drew Brown and Allie Compeau. Also part of a capable freshman nucleus are Paige McCabe and Kendall Stone. First-year eight-graders looking to earn playing time include Ashlee Marsh, Peyton Warden and Matisyn Beamer. Jill Gaebel will be serving as co-head coach.
The Lady Sandstoners are slated to open the NAC season on April 10 on the road against Saranac Lake.
