Brasher officials set public hearing for sewer ordinance

BRASHER FALLS — Brasher residents will have a chance to weigh in on the town’s revised sewer ordinance in April.

The Town Council will take comments at the beginning of their 4:30 p.m. meeting on April 10.

“It’s bought up to date. It’s modern,” Supervisor M. James Dawson said, noting the last update to the ordinance had been in 1976.

The update of the sewer ordinance came to the forefront earlier this year after contaminated well water was funneled into the system in early November at the St. Lawrence Central middle and high school building.

The problem was discovered when the water took on a different color and odor. Once the problem was discovered, the district received authorization from the state Education Department to dig a new well earlier than scheduled. It had been planned as part of an upcoming capital project.

Department of Environmental Conservation officials recommended pumping water from the old well into the town’s sewer system to rid the system of all contamination before beginning to use the new well. The school stopped pumping water into the municipal sewer system at the end of 2012.

Mr. Dawson pointed out earlier this year that there were now substances being put into the sewer system that didn’t even exist in the 1970s when the initial sewer ordinance was drafted.

Among his initial concerns was that the glycol in the contaminated water at the school could disrupt the process at the sewer plant lagoons.
