MASSENA Town officials have asked for an appraisal on property at the end of Pontoon Bridge Road.
The Massena Town Council voted unanimously to hire Varley Appraisal Group, LLC, for $1,200 to appraise the almost 69-acre parcel of land, which was handed over to the town by the New York Power Authority as part of its 2003 relicensing agreement.
I think the town councils thought was rather than let it sit there and not collect taxes, we need to put the property up for sale and get it back on the tax roll, Supervisor Joseph D. Gray said.
However, Mr. Gray also expressed an interest in exploring possible recreational uses for the property.
I like the idea of selling it and generating some revenue, but I am wondering if it has some recreational value, he said previously.
Mr. Gray said the use of the property may hinge on the results of the appraisal.
If it shows a low value for the land, town officials may be more eager to use the property for recreational purposes.
Though the town has owned the land for several years, the council had no need to discuss the sale or development of the property until now, according to town officials.
The town didnt have to spend money to maintain the property, there was no reason to take action, Mr. Gray said. The push now is: can we sell the property to generate some revenue?
