I write regarding a previous letter to this publication in which I erroneously credited Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell with being a steadfast supporter of the Second Amendment. The fact is, however, that the assemblywoman voted in favor of the recently enacted NY SAFE Act, which gives New York state the dubious distinction of having the most onerous gun laws in the nation while failing to make the residents of New York safer in any meaningful way. My apologies to you and your readers for my error.
To set the record straight those that support the Second Amendment and who voted against the NY SAFE Act include state Sen. Pattie Ritchie, state Sen. Joe Griffo and Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush. Others who have been steadfast supporters of the Second Amendment include Rep. Bill Owens and the Jefferson County Board of Legislators. All of these individuals are deserving of their constituents continuing support at the polls.
The same cannot be said of Ms. Russell, Sen. Charles Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand or Gov. Andrew Cuomo. I urge my fellow citizens, in future elections, to give their support to alternate candidates who pledge to preserve, protect and defend the Bill of Rights, specifically the Second Amendment.
To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, those who would trade freedom for a little safety deserve neither.
