Ton’s Sports Bar seeks new location

POTSDAM — The owner of Ton’s Sports Bar is looking for a new location in light of plans for a hotel that would be built on the site of the restaurant.

The bar has been at 159 Market St. for nearly 17 years, but a proposed Hampton Inn would be built on the property occupied by Ton’s and Scoopuccino’s, 167 Market St.

“We’re trying to move it. We’re not sure where we’re going to put it yet,” said Ton’s owner Thomas G. Delosh.

Mr. Delosh said the bar will stay on outer Market Street. There are several vacant buildings with plenty of parking that might be potential candidates, but he said it might be a few months before a decision is made.

In the meantime, Ton’s will continue operating as normal.

“We want to find a place that’s a good location,” Mr. Delosh said. “We’re not sure yet, but we’re definitely going to move it.”

Mr. Delosh said he doesn’t want to move the bar closer to the center of Potsdam. Ton’s is mostly a hangout for locals, rather than a party scene for college students. Mr. Delosh said he wants to keep it that way.

“We definitely don’t want to go downtown,” he said.

Wherever the bar ends up, Mr. Delosh is taking the move as a chance to retire. “My son is going to take it over,” he said.

Jeffrey Delosh will begin running the business once a new location is found. The plan is to preserve the sports-bar atmosphere of the tavern’s first 17 years.
