City posts first-quarter sales tax increase

OGDENSBURG — The city’s first-quarter sales tax revenue is up from a year ago, a modest bump in a typically low post-holiday spending period.

With Saturday marking the end of the first fiscal quarter of 2013, the city’s 6.437389 percent share of St. Lawrence County’s 3 percent sales tax amounted to $394,433.40.

The first quarter’s receipts a year ago were $390,356.76, a difference of $4,076.24., according to City Comptroller Philip A. Cosmo.

The increase in this first quarter represented a second consecutive annual rise in sales tax collection in the city.

Nevertheless, the first fiscal quarter remains a low revenue generator compared with the rest of the year.

“Everybody is kind of spent out after the holidays,” Mr. Cosmo said Friday.

The city is projecting $2,705,000 this fiscalyear. Last year, the actual total collected was $2,700,928.49, which was $88,028.49 more than anticipated in the city budget.
