Vote your conscience

At the time of writing this piece, Congress has adjourned for another two-week vacation. Are you kidding me? So far it seems that they have accomplished nothing except blocking any kind of progress on any issue. We haven’t got a jobs bill, and the sequester hasn’t been repealed. Rep. John Boehner and his cronies continue to refuse to budge on closing tax loopholes for the rich. Ironically, air traffic controllers and airports will be negatively affected by this latest fiscal crisis, but the wealthy will still be able to get a tax break for purchasing a private jet.

Politicians who have been bought and paid for by corporate wealth care nothing for the citizens who are suffering. They think it’s your fault if your low-paying job isn’t enough to cover food for your family. They even resent that you apply for food stamps rather than have your kids go hungry. They are so arrogant, they actually behave as if ignoring the clear mandate of the American voters expressed in the last election will have no bearing on their political future. They continue to debate old issues as a way of obstructing progress. Perhaps they believe the money that bought them will continue to flow, buying them their next election.

Most of us don’t really care who someone else falls in love with. We want to be free to practice our religion, but don’t want to force our beliefs down anyone else’s throat. We want good education for our kids. We want jobs that pay a living wage. We realize that the so-called “job creators” are the very people who will do whatever they can to pay workers as little as possible. They are the ones sending jobs overseas to be performed by what is essentially a slave labor force, while sheltering the profits in the Cayman Islands. Americans have been fooled in the past, but not any longer. The last election proves that.

All of the tantrums and histrionics from these aging, outdated, out-of-touch politicians are just the final attempt at preserving a system they set up for the benefit of a small segment of Americans and for themselves. Their days are numbered. All their outcries about socialism and government entitlements are the death rattle of the Republicans who have taken over what was once a reasonable political party.

Don’t be discouraged. Speak your mind and vote your conscience. Voting does matter. Alone we may not be very powerful, but collectively there are millions of us. These guys are tricky and will try to retain power by any means, even voter suppression. Stay informed and don’t let them wear you down. That’s what they are counting on.
