Buccaneers sign Gouverneur native and running back Brian Leonard

Gouverneur’s Brian Leonard was reunited with his college coach at Rutgers University, Greg Schiano, on Monday as he became a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Bucs will be Leonard’s third NFL team in seven years after enjoying a standout career at Rutgers under Schiano, who led the Bucs to a 7-9 record last season.

Several media outlets reported that Leonard was leaving the Cincinnati Bengals in signing a one-year contact as a free agent contract with the Bucs.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Leonard will contend with former New York Giants back D.J. Ware for the role of a third-down back.

In two years with the St. Louis Rams and four years with the Bengals, Leonard distinguished himself as a versatile running back-fullback with the ability pick up first downs as a runner and a pass receiver.

Last season, he averaged 3.1 yards per run and 7.3 yards per catch with the Bengals, for whom he was also valued for his play on special teams.

Leonard, who hosts a summer football camp at SUNY Potsdam, tweeted Monday “Had a great run with Bengals, thanks for the last four years.”
