Morristown boat launch renovation will be done in time for boating season

MORRISTOWN – The majority of construction on the village boat launch on the St. Lawrence River has been completed, with crews awaiting warmer weather before adding the final touches.

The project went roughly $3,000 over budget, Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said, for total cost of $107,000.

“It looks very good,” Mrs. Shatraw said.

The launch at Morristown Bay, still hemmed in with ice despite last week’s warm weather, sports a newly surfaced ramp with a concrete structure jutting out into the water.

That’s where a long, wooden dock will be attached once the ice clears, giving boaters easier access and clearly dividing the ramp in two.

That dock will be removed each winter, Mrs. Shatraw said, to protect it from the elements.

“You never know what the ice is going to do,” she said.

The new ramp should also afford people an easier time launching boats into the St. Lawrence and retrieving them after – especially when the water level drops in the fall.

Morristown’s new boat launch extends 50 feet into the bay, Mrs. Shatraw said.

“We will have it open for boating season,” the mayor said.

In addition to attaching the wooden dock, she said, there is still asphalt to be poured.

“I don’t have an exact date for you,” Mrs. Shatraw said of the grand re-opening of the boat launch, saying it will be open as soon weather conditions allow the asphalt to be poured.
