Martin scores second goal for Cortland

CORTLAND - Chelsea Martin, a sophomore from Ogdensburg, scored her second goal of the season as number four nationally ranked Cortland State downed Oneonta State 20-7 in a SUNYAC Women’s Lacrosse game on a windy, cold home game on Tuesday.

Twelve different players scored for the Red Dragons who improved 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

A pair of freshmen in Erica Geremia (5-3) and Tara Monaghan (3-2) led the winning offense.

Martin, who plays attack and midfield, has scored on two of her three shots this season where she has played in seven games and started one.

WENTWORTH EMERGING

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Canton’s Kacie Wentworth has enjoyed a sophomore season of emergence for the NCAA Division I Sacred Heart University Women’s Softball team.

Wentworth has seen action on the mound and in the outfield for the Pioneers who have posted a 16-11 record with a 2-2 North Eastern Conference mark under the direction of Ogdensburg native Bippy Luckie.

Wentworth has pitched to a 4-2 record with a 2.13 ERA in seven appearances and has posted 11 strikeouts and five walks in 23 innings. She has completed two of her five starts and pitched one shutout in a 1-0 victory over Monmouth on Saturday where she faced just 24 batters.

Wentworth has seen action in 26 games hitting.260 with three doubles and 10 RBIs. She has played errorless defense in the outfield while recording two putouts and eight assists.

JOHNSON SISTERS FIND STRIDE

POTSDAM - Heather and Megan Johnson of Heuvelton are part of a group of Northern Conference products are all enjoying very prolific early seasons for the SUNY Potsdam Women’s Softball team.

Heather Johnson, a senior shortstop-outfielder, is hitting a team-high .500 (13-26) with one double and two triples and 13 RBIs for the 5-5 Bears who went 5-1 on their Florida swing.

Megan Johnson, a junior who has pitched and played secondbase, shows a .348 average (8-23), shares the team lead with two homeruns and has pitched to a 1.75 ERA and a 1-0 record in three relief appearances.

Two St. Lawrence Central products in junior Ashley Thayer (P/OF) and junior Molly McCuin (3B) have also enjoyed fine starts at the plate for the Bears.

Thayer, who has also compiled a 3-2 pitching record, is hitting .440 (11-25) and McGuin is hitting .385 (10-26) with two doubles. Khalshia White (3B/C/OF), a junior from St. Regis Falls, has contributed a double and one RBI while hitting .182 in 11 at-bats.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

CANTON — Brigid Hurley scored six goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team to a 16-13 victory over rival Clarkson in a Liberty League game Tuesday afternoon. Clarkson (6-2 overall, 1-2 conference) led 6-5 at the half, but SLU went on an 11-7 run in the second half. Caroline Bailey scored four goals for SLU (6-4, 2-1).Christine Wright and Alyssa Cristaldi each produced four goals for Clarkson.

Potsdam 15 - New Paltz 14: Denise Johns scored with 76 seconds left in overtime to give SUNY Potsdam a SUNYAC victory

Potsdam outscored SUNY New Paltz 8-4 in the second half and forced overtime when Bri McClusky scored with one second left. Margaret Wall led the Bears (3-3, 1-0) with five goals. Kelsey Healy led SUNY New Paltz (3-3, 0-2) with five goals.
