Family opens bank account for cancer-stricken Waddington woman

Genevieve L. “Jenny” Lesperance Sutton, 51, is the kind of person who thinks of others before herself.

So when she was diagnosed with Stage 4, terminal lung cancer on March 15, her cousin, Vivianne Roach, decided she would return the favor.

“She is a very kind and giving person if she had a dollar left and you needed it she would give it to you,” Ms. Roach said.

Ms. Roach has set up an account in the name of Jenny Sutton Fund, at SeaComm Federal Credit Union, 3001 Ford St. Extension, to raise money to cover medical and funeral expenses.

Mrs. Sutton, a native of Ogdensburg who currently lives in Waddington, has a husband, three children, and nine grandchildren.

“She still, at this point, despite her condition, tries to take care of them,” Ms. Roach said.

Mrs. Sutton was too ill to comment for this article.

Family members said she is no stranger to illness. Her brother, Robert Lesperance Jr., died of a heart condition at the age of 24 in 1989. At 17, Mrs. Sutton was diagnosed with dystonia, a condition which caused paralysis on the right side of her body and difficulties with motor coordination.

“But she is an independent, strong-minded girl,” Marilyn LaFlair, her mother, said. “You’d never know that anything was wrong.”

Mrs. LaFlair said she and her daughter regularly play computer games together.

“I’m not ready to let her go,” Mrs. LaFlair said. “She’s my oldest, but she’ll always be my baby.”

On April 12, Mrs. Sutton will celebrate her 52nd birthday.

“Her biggest wish is to have one big birthday party with all her family around,” Mrs. LaFlair said. “So that is what we are going to do.”

Her father, Robert A. Lesperance Sr., her sister, Denise Carpenter, and her brother, Ronald J. Lesperance, will be driving up from Georgia to attend the party. The family is asking friends, relatives and anyone who can make a donation to help Mrs. Sutton and her family relieve some of the financial stress caused by her illness. The family is hoping to raise at least $5,600.

Mrs. Sutton’s three children are Jenny Vaughan, Tonya Purvis and John Meashaw. Her grandchildren are Courtney and Brandon Meashaw; Ashley, Kailey and Adriana Purvis; Brittany and Jacob Meashaw; and Nathanial and Hannah Vaughan.
