MASSENA - With this years Kidfest not being held until April, Massena Nursery School Vice President Renee M. Barto said coming up with a theme was easy.
This years theme is Spring Into Action & Give Back.
Were having it month later, Ms. Barto said. They always called it a winter carnival, but this year were having it in April, so we went with a spring theme.
As for the giving back portion, the event, which is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at J.W. Leary Junior High, serves as the schools largest fundraiser each year and is also doubling as a food drive, with patrons who bring a nonperishable food item being given two free tickets that may be used for the festivals games and attractions.
Ms. Barto said admission is free, but tickets are needed for the games and attractions, which include balloon artist Schuyler The Balloonatic Conto, games, temporary tattoos, face painting by Belly Buttons the clown and two bounce houses.
Lunch will also be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with pizza from Trombinos, chips, Perrys ice cream, and soft drinks available for sale. A bake sale will also be held.
Parents are also encouraged to bring their cameras as special guests for this years event include Elmo, Bert and Ernie, and a surprise fourth guest, who will be available to visit with children and pose for free photos.
Drawings will also be held for both childrens and adult prizes with two Power Wheels, an easel and art supplies and a Tastefully Simple gift basket among the prizes up for grabs.
And since the school has been struggling due to declining enrollment in recent years, this years festival is more important than ever.
Were going to be good for at least another year, Ms. Barto said, adding theyve put a lot of work into promoting this years festival.
Weve done a lot more advertising this year, so were hoping for a great turnout and in the end to keep the nursery school thriving, she said.
According to President Mollie M. Ledbetter, the extra work has already paid off.
Applications for next year are available now and will be available at Saturdays event.
Our four-year-old class is already almost full, Ms. Ledbetter said, adding though that several slots still remain for three-year-olds.
The schools four-year-old program runs Monday through Friday, with three-year-olds participating in either a two-day, Tuesday and Thursday; or three-day, Monday, Wednesday and Friday; program. Each class runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
