Little River school addition moving ahead

CANTON - Although the fundraising goal hasn’t been met, Little River Community School plans to start building an addition in May that will provide room for a few more students.

Steven A. Molnar, director of the alternative school at 127 County Route 25, said the building project has been slightly downscaled to reduce the price.

Roughly $47,000 has been raised from the total $71,000 estimated pricetag.

Money was raised through fundraisers, individual donations and $2,500 from the Grasse Roots Fund.

“We are close enough that it’s not wishful thinking. We are moving ahead and will continue to raise money,” Mr. Molnar said. “We’re feeling good about the numbers.”

The two-story addition will be constructed by Alvin Graber, an Amish man who resides in Madrid.

The extra 700 square feet will provide room for one extra classroom and a new multi-purpose room that will be used for theater performances, art projects and larger gatherings. Two small areas will be created for one-on-one instruction.

“It will provide a better floor plan throughout the building,” Mr. Molnar said.

The school will have room for five or six more students, with openings primarily for younger ages. This year, about 33 students are enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12.

Another full-time teacher will be hired and the application is available on the school’s website at

An open house for potential new families is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 18 at the school.
