MASSENA - A mechanical malfunction in a gate at Eisenhower Lock resulted in delayed traffic along the St. Lawrence Seaway for about 12 hours Monday.
At 10:45 a.m. Monday, seaway employees noticed the malfunctioning strut-arm, which resulted in the locks gate being unable to open, according to Seaway Associate Administrator Salvatore Sal Pisani. The strut-arm was back on line at 11:05 p.m. Monday and during the more than 12 hours off-line eight vessels were delayed.
Mr. Pisani said the problem was mechanical, and that strut-arms malfunctions do happen occassionally at the Eisenhower Lock.
Seaway officials are currently reviewing the malfunction, Mr. Pisani added.
