MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity girls lacrosse team is poised to keep a good thing going for 2013.
The Lady Raiders have gone undefeated through two straight NAC regular season championship seasons and have captured three straight Section 10 titles. With a lineup that features a majority of veterans and the addition of a talented group of underclassman, coach Jeffrey Slack enters his third season at the helm expecting continued success.
We have quite a few players coming back and we have a nice group of younger players that are showing a lot of potential so I think we can do well again this year, noted Slack as the Lady Raiders get set to begin their bid for a third straight NAC banner this afternoon at home against Canton at Mike Nicholas Field starting at 4:30 p.m.
Serving as captains of this years squad are seniors Erin Francis (attack) and Dominique Valancius (midfield) along with juniors Shannon Casey (attack) and Carlie Leary (midfield). Francis returns as the teams leading scorer for the past two season and according to Slack, has committed to resume her lacrosse career at the collegiate level as a member of the nationally-ranked Division I program at Syracuse University.
Senior Stefanie Premo returns to anchor the backfield hopes along with sophomores Courtney Hart and Nicole Morgan and freshman Maddi Dillabough. Another key senior veteran is Alisha Jacobs, who will make the move from starting goaltender to starting attacker. Taking over the goaltending reigns this spring will be junior Annalee Beckstead, who saw regular playing time on defense last season.
Also hoping to contribute at forward are juniors Megan Hans and Ashlyn Olson, sophomore Ellen Green and freshman Abby LaClair. The midfield corps also consists of senior Astrid Fabia, sophomores Annie Casey, Mia Jermano and Emily Wilmshurst along with freshmen Raechel Davis, Devin Kelly, Molly OConnell, Sophia Rusaw and Makaul Vandermast. Expected to bolster the backfield effort are senior Courtney Patterson and sophomore Colleen Besaw.
