LAFARGEVILLE — LaFargeville Central will ask district voters in May to approve a $10.5 million budget that carries a 3.6 percent tax levy increase.

Under the district’s state tax cap calculations, LaFargeville can raise the levy by up to 5.2 percent in the 2013-14 fiscal year without requiring a supermajority approval.

The total levy, or amount to be raised through property taxes, will be $3,495,459 — up $120,693 from this year.

The levy increase is projected to hike the tax rate by 29 cents to $8.46 per $1,000 of assessed value, a 3.5 percent increase.

District officials said the tax rate could go down after the new Price Chopper — which is near Interstate 81 in the town of Alexandria but is in the LaFargeville Central School District — is added to the tax roll.

Assuming the Price Chopper on Route 12 is assessed at $2 million, LaFargeville’s projected tax rate would be $8.42 per $1,000.

As with last year, the district will use $945,000 from its fund balance to buy down the levy.

LaFargeville Superintendent Susan L. Whitney said the district should have enough left in its fund balance next year to apply the same amount.

If approved by voters in May, the district’s total spending for 2013-14 will be $10,528,501.

That is a $365,455, or 3.6 percent, increase over this year — most of which was attributed to a $323,127 increase in employee benefit costs.

LaFargeville Central’s Board of Education will hold a budget hearing at 7 p.m. May 13 at the library, Sunrise Avenue, and the vote is May 21.
