WADDINGTON – It’s cold, it’s wet and it’s muddy outside; depressing, considering temperatures last year at this time were between 60 and 70 degrees.

But members of the St. Lawrence Showdown committee say they have the perfect way to beat the extended-winter blues: a game of trivia with friends and family.

The committee’s Thursday trivia nights, which begin today at Dar’s Place, Massena, will also give participants the opportunity to warm up with some cold, hard cash prizes.

Four-person teams can register for $80. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m., with trivia starting at 7 p.m. The events will be emceed by Todd Truax from Q102.9.

A 50/50 raffle winner will be drawn each night. Tickets for the grand prize $15,000 raffle to be drawn in August will also be available for purchase.

The fundraiser, which will benefit the Bassmaster Elite Series: St. Lawrence River Showdown tournament, coming to north country Aug. 8 to 11, will take place at various places throughout the month of April.

Other trivia nights are scheduled for The Hoot Owl, Canton, April 18, The Freight House, Ogdensburg, on April 25, and the Waddington Old Town Hall on May 2.

Attend one or attend them all, coordinator William D. Hosmer said. “We’re hoping for any support we can get.”

The committee is hoping to raise $3,000 to $4,000 through all five trivia nights, Mr. Hosmer said. The committee has already raised roughly $25,000 toward its $100,000 goal.

“We need the community’s support as much as we can,” organizer Claire A. Putney said. “Eventually the benefits of the tournament will support the entire community.”

Organizers said the event will be perfect for all trivia lovers, and promises only one or two fishing-related questions.

“They will mostly test general knowledge, with questions current events and history,” Mr. Hosmer said. “It’s designed for anyone to come out and have a good time.”
