Massena, Potsdam girls lacrosse teams net wins in NAC season openers


The Massena Central and Potsdam Central varsity girls lacrosse teams opened the 2013 NAC season in winning fashion on their home fields Wednesday afternoon.

Massena 12, Canton 5: At Mike Nicholas Field, the Lady Raiders relayed an 8-3 halftime lead into a convincing win over the Lady Bears.

Junior Annalee Beckstead highlighted the Massena effort with a 15-save performance in her lacrosse goaltending debut.

“This was a good win. I thought all the girls played well but I was especially proud of our goaltender. She faced her first shot as a goalie two weeks ago and she came up with a lot of key saves today,” noted coach Jeffrey Slack as the Lady Raiders successfully began their quest for a third straight undefeated NAC season.

Senior Erin Francis led the way offensively for Massena with five goals. Classmate Dominique Valancius netted three while senior Alisha Jacobs tallied a goal and three assists. Shannon Casey (1 assist), Carlie Leary and Devin Kelly struck for the other Lady Raider goals while Alanna Pike recorded a solo assist.

Tess Knight and Alison Noble paced the Canton effort with two goals each. Katie Lapinski connected for the other goal and Rachael Huntley logged an assist.

Meg Howard also stood tall in goal for the Lady Bears (0-1), turning aside 15 of the shots she faced, the majority from close range.

The Lady Raiders return to action next Tuesday at home against OFA starting at 4:30 p.m.

Potsdam 8, Saranac Lake 5: The host Lady Sandstoners worked their way to a 6-2 halftime lead en route to turning back the Red Storm for the win. Michaela Cole had three goals and an assist and Nettie Rishe broke through for another three goals to anchor the Potsdam attack. Kalie Grant notched a goal and two assists while Ally Miller (1 assist) accounted for the other goal.

Kayla Woodruff netted two goals in the losing cause. Sheila Decker tallied a goal and assisst while Erin Skufca and Olivia Sappone connected for the other goals.

Katelyn Bloom made five saves backstopping the win.

The Lady Sandstoners return to action on Friday at home against Heuvelton starting at 4:30 p.m. A varsity boys game between Potsdam and Salmon River is slated to follow at 6:30 p.m.

OFA 11, Heuvelton 7: In Ogdensburg, Kaitlin Sheppard finished with four goals and one assist and MacKenzie Bresett tallied three goals with two assists to lead the winning offense which also included two goals by Nicole Hammond and single scores from Nikki Holmes and Mackenzie Comeau.

Jackie Sovie led the Heuvelton attack with six goals while Olivia St. Pierre scored the other goal in her varsity lacrosse debut.

Erica Chase stopped eight shots in the OFA goal and L. Chambers posted nine saves for Heuvelton.
