North Country wrestlers compete at nationals


VIRGINIA BEACH - Ogdensburg’s Bailey Phelps was one of four Northern Conference wrestlers to compete in the NHSCA Nationals held in Virginia Beach on April 4-5.

Four north country wrestlers earned All-American honors. Three of the four wrestlers earning All-American Honors wrestled in the Freshman Nationals: 113lbs-Andrew McFarland(Carthage) and 170lbs-Sonny McPherson Indian River finished seventh and at 182lbs-Ricardo Dawkins(General Brown) finished 5th place.

Gouverneur’s Dillon Stowell was the fourth All-American finishing seventh at 113 pounds in the Senior Nationals.

Phelps was successful in his first match of the Sophomore Nationals defeating Delaware’s Thomas Otlowski 5-0. In Phelps’ second match he as pinned in 1:59 seconds by Blake Monty of Arizona who went on to earn All-American status with a seventh place finish.

Phelps was eliminated from the tournament after losing to Tennessee’s Josh Feuerbacher by fall at the 2:52 mark. Feuerbacher took fifth at the Tennessee state tournament this year.

Stowell All-American

Gouverneur’s 2013 New York State Champions Hunter Ayen and Dillon Stowell looked to continue their success at the Senior Nationals.

A third Wildcat standout, Zach Ayen, also competed in the nationals.

Stowell opened up the tournament with a 6-4 win over three-time state champ Michael Ruffino from Connecticut. Stowell’s second match came against a two- time Maryland state champion Brant Leadbeater and was a back and forth duel with Leadbeater getting the takedown in the last 10 seconds of the match for a 7-5 win.

Stowell needed to win his next match in order to clinch All-American honors and wrestled a great match to defeat a multiple time state place finisher Trevor Shultz of Minnesota 7-0 to earn a spot on the podium.

Stowell then fell in the wrestlebacks to New York’s Mat Bradice 5-2. Stowell went on to win his final match against New York’s Steve Sewkamuer 10-6.

Stowell was one of 26 wrestlers in his weight class.

After being tied 7-7 with former South Carolina state champ Daniel Witmore, Hunter Ayen lost by pin. Hunter also had success in the wrestle backs shutting out a three-time state place-finisher from Massachusetts Ramesses Akamefula 7-0 and Chris Chambers from New York 8-0.

Ayen fell 2 matches short of earning All-American honors after getting pinned by South Carolina State Champion Clint Wright. Ayen had 38.

Zach Ayen started off the Wildcats weekend on Thursday with a dominating win over Pennsylvania’s Nicholas Buckle 15-0 but lost by pin to two- time state finalist from Maryland Brendenwho went on to take sixth place.

Ayen’s success continued after beating Cody Pirkle, a two-time state finalist from South Carolina 10-2.

After trailing 6-3 to a two-time state place-finisher from North Carolina, Joshua Markham, Ayen was able to turn Markham over and pick up the fall. Ayen was eliminated after losing to Pennsylvania’s Travis Roper 5-1.

Ayen was 1 of 76 wrestlers in his weight-class.
