Ogdensburg clears brush from Maple City Trail

The view from Congress and Crescent Street is about to be significantly improved as the city works to clear the underbrush that’s grown up around the Maple City Trail.

“We had complaints from some residents about the view in the summer time,” Kit W. Smith, director of the city’s Department of Public Works, said.

And so starting on Monday the city has been clearing built up brush from the embankment that starts by the Ogdensburg Dam and continues to the end of Crescent Street.

“We’re removing all the underbrush and weeding out some of the scrub trees that started to grow up in that area,” Mr. Smith said.

Patrick McCarthy, crew leader in charge of overseeing the work Thursday, said, “It’s a lot farther than it looks.”

The embankment, just under a half-mile long, is a 60-degree slope that’s making progress both dangerous and slow.

Adding to the difficulty of clearing the area is the thick brush that has proven difficult to remove Mr. McCarthy said.

But the work is moving ahead. As of Thursday the city had already cleared roughly 300 feet.

“It’s moving along pretty well, we’re pretty happy about it,” Mr. Smith said.

Mr. Smith said he hopes the project will be completed by the end of the month.

Even after the clearing has been complete, however, the city is looking for ways to ensure the brush doesn’t creep up again.

“Once we get it in a manageable state we will be able to maintain it better,” Mr. Smith said.

The city is also considering planting perennial flowers to help keep the area stable, Mr. Smith added.
