HS lacrosse: IHC defeats Watertown, 13-11; Potsdam victorious


The blustery weather on Thursday night didn’t deter the Immaculate Heart Central boys lacrosse team.

Matt Moran scored five goals and Nick Koelmel tallied three goals as the Cavaliers rallied past city rival Watertown to post a 13-11 triumph in a Frontier League “A” Division game at Watertown High School.

IHC (2-0, 2-0) trailed 9-8 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the Cyclones, 5-2 in the decisive period.

After Watertown (1-2, 1-1) took its last lead of the night at 11-10, the Cavaliers responded with three unanswered goals to close the game, including Jude Whalen’s game-winning tally.

Goalie Daniel Grant made nine saves and allowed only two goals in the fourth quarter to record the win.

Jared Pignone won 15 of 24 faceoffs for the Cavaliers, including the final six draws in the game.

Cole Carpenter contributed two goals and an assist for IHC, and Pat Gefell chipped in with a goal and an assist. Nick Gervera also scored for the Cavaliers.

Kendall Vecchio and Noah Taylor each scored three goals and had an assist for the Cyclones, and Brad McKinney tallied three goals.

Austin Gibson finished with eight saves for Watertown.

Eric Soderquist contributed a goal and an assist for the Cyclones and Andrew Keenan scored a goal.


The Comets blanked the Red Raiders in a crossover game in Carthage to record consecutive shutouts for the first time in school history.

Goalies Trevor Gibbons and Tristan Hancock each made two saves for Carthage (4-0, 3-0), which shut out Indian River, 18-0 on Tuesday.

Bailey Wilkenson totaled seven points, including six assists for the Comets, and Casey Boulio scored five goals and assisted on another.

Seth Leonard tallied three goals and two assists for Carthage, which led 11-0 at halftime.

Josh Yelvington and Alex Mack each scored two goals for the Comets, Alex Gillette chipped in with a goal and two assists, and Chris DeRonda and Devon Lajoie each had a goal and an assist. Bryan Peloquin also scored for Carthage.

Tyler Birchenough finished with seven saves for Lowville (0-2, 0-2).


Kyle Grant and Hayden Hart each scored twice as the Sandstoners (2-0) defeated Colton-Pierrepont in an Northern Athletic Conference game in Potsdam.

Stephen Lewis and Cody Compeau also scored for Potsdam, which was the visiting team on its own field.

Gyle Dominy scored for the Colts (0-3, 0-2).


Ian Lynch was part of seven goals, with five goals and two assists, as the Larries (1-1) defeated Massena in an NAC game at Brasher Falls.

Luke Arquiett scored three goals with one assist and Blake Baldwin, Styles Arquiett and Cody Burns each scored twice. Tyler Kowalchuk also scored for SLC.

Grayson Phillips scored all three goals for Massena (0-2).
