BROWNVILLE Mr. and Mrs. William H. McGarry III, 104 Brown Road, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on March 18 with a dinner with family and friends at the Olive Garden, Watertown.
Mr. McGarry, son of the late William II and Geraldine McGarry, and Margaret F. Kirkland, daughter of the late Everett and Sarah Kelly Kirkland, were married on March 18, 1943, at St. Patricks Church, Watertown, with the Rev. Eugene A. Kelly officiating. Honor attendants were the late Mary Frances Plumpton, sister of the groom, and the late Daniel C. Ryan.
Mr. McGarry graduated from Watertown High School in 1942 and served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. During World War II, he served with the 299th Combat Engineers and was awarded a Bronze Star. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked several jobs, including at the railroad, post office and broadcasting. Mr. McGarry retired from Bradley Hardwares sporting goods department in 1984, after 33 years of employment. He is a member of Palisades Hunting Club, Watertown and Sackets Harbor Sportsmens Club. He enjoys trapshooting and photography.
Mrs. McGarry graduated from Watertown High School in 1943. She retired from New York Telephone Co., Brownville, in 1987. She enjoys needlework, knitting and reading.
Mr. and Mrs. McGarry enjoy hunting and fishing.
A son, James P., died in 2006, and a grandson, James D. Jamie, died in 1999.
