Motorcycle crash sends woman to hospital in Syracuse

A Fort Drum soldier was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Syracuse after the motorcycle she was operating was hit Wednesday morning at East Hoard and Mill streets.

Watertown police said the motorcycle, driven by Brigid C. Russell, 23, of 112 Court St., Apt. 11, was hit about 9:30 a.m. by a Kia Optima driven by Everett W. Deline, 72, of 518 Waite St., who was traveling east on Hoard Street.

Ms. Russell was taken by Guilfoyle ambulance to the nearby Northpole Fire Department station. From there, she was flown to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, where she was listed in fair condition Wednesday afternoon. Police Lt. Michael J. Mullins said Ms. Russell was in and out of consciousness, with cuts to her head and legs, and possible chest trauma while she was still at the scene.

After hearing a loud crash, Carl R. Franks, who lives at 759 Mill St., came out of his house and called 911.

“She was laying on the back of the car,” Mr. Franks said. “Good thing she was wearing a helmet.”

When police arrived, Ms. Russell was still sprawled across the back of the car, Lt. Mullins said. Parts of the blue Suzuki motorcycle were in the road, and the car’s passenger-side door was damaged.

Police said Mr. Deline, the only person in the Kia, told them that he did not see the motorcycle. Mr. Deline was crossing the intersection when the crash happened, Lt. Mullins said.

Mill Street between Katherine Street and Highland Avenue was closed off for more than an hour as police investigated. Also at the scene was the city’s Fire Department.
