HAMMOND – The town and village are moving ahead with their economic development plan.
The Hammond Business and Economic Development Committee held its first meeting Wednesday. Committee members discussed a range of ideas for events designed to promote the village and town from an annual regatta to a seasonal farmers market.
What we are looking to accomplish are some small, tangible goals, committee co-chair Michael Stock said. If we try to tackle some of the more overwhelming goals right at the beginning, we might not be as successful and become discouraged.
The groups first projects will be establishing a farmers market, an annual fireworks display at Singer Castle and a slogan to be imprinted on a new welcome sign for Hammond and Chippewa Bay.
Every community has a slogan, committee co-chair Erica C. Demick said. I think Hammond has to decide what that is so we can figure out the best way to market ourselves.
Committee members are inviting input from residents on their Facebook page, Visit Hammond NY, and website www.visithammondny.com.
The slogan should tie in the St. Lawrence River, Black Lake, and what we have to offer, committee member Thomas A. Weldon said.
The group is also looking for volunteers to organize a weekly summer farmers market in the village at the Hammond Museum, 1 North Main St.
We just need to pick a day and a decide on a place to run it, Mr. Weldon said. Once we work out the initial logistics of the event, it will basically run itself.
Those interested in participating or organizing the farmers market can contact Ms. Demick at 486-9296 or Mr. Stock at 759-8174.
